BAU: Soldiers foiled a man’s attempt to smuggle a suspected stolen vehicle into a neighbouring country during an operation called ‘Operasi Keris Parang’ in Serikin near here at about 8.20am on Wednesday.

A man, 41, was spotted driving in a suspicious manner by soldiers from the 13th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment during a roadblock. The soldiers stopped and checked the man after they also saw suspicious registration plate number on the car, said a spokesman of the Eastern Field Command headquarters.

“After detecting the changes to the registration plate number, the road tax was also checked and it turned out that they (registration and road tax) do not match.

“Following the finding, our member informed his superior before arresting the suspect,” the spokesperson said in a press statement received here yesterday.

The suspect was later handed over to the police. The car, worth about RM100,000 was also seized as an exhibit, and handed over to  Bau police station for further action. The car, bearing a Bintulu registration number, is believed to have been stolen and was being smuggled into West Kalimantan.
