BAU: All the 30 climbers believed to have gone missing on Mount Brik in Kampung Tringus, about 35km from here, have descended the mountain safely.

The 30, originally believed to be 33, had postponed the return from the peak by a day due to the uncertain weather yesterday when they were supposed to have come back.

The 17 women and 13 men were safe except for some minor cuts and bruises, said Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Nor Hisham Mohammad.

“The climbers made a wise decision to postpone their descent because the river there was flowing swiftly yesterday and its water level had risen too,” he said.

The climbers descended in two batches, the first batch of nine reaching the the Fire and Rescue Service camp at the foothill at 2.45pm and the second batch of 21 arriving 15 minutes later.

Nor Hisham said three Bomba personnel and several villagers scaled the mountain along the descent route and came across the climbers who were on their way down.

The climbers were originally scheduled to return from the mountain yesterday after having scaled it the day before but found the weather unfavourable for their descent.

A missing persons report was lodged at the Bau District Police headquarters earlier today. – Bernama
