BAU: Bumiputera youths in Sarawak, especially in the Bau district, are encouraged to venture into the agro-based industry sector, especially in food business.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Datuk Anthony Nogeh said that food business is a huge industry in Malaysia with the country still importing food, worth billions of ringgit.

“Last year alone, Malaysia imported food products, worth RM4.1 billion, and this shows that our food production must not only be for local markets, but also for export,” he said at a Tekun Nasional programme here Sunday night.

He said youths should optimise the various programmes and loans provided by the government under the relevant agencies, including financing by Tekun Nasional. The ministry, he said, had also implemented various programmes for youths.

Earlier, Tekun Nasional chief executive officer Datuk Baharom Embi said Tekun Nasional had disbursed RM246.3 million in business loans to 29,963 entrepreneurs in Sarawak.

“It is part of the RM5 billion financing nationwide, involving 402,842 entrepreneurs since Tekun Nasional’s establishment in 1998,” he said.

He said as of January this year, Tekun Nasional, through the Young Agropreneur Financing Schemehad disbursed RM16.4 million for 438 youths nationwide. For Sarawak, RM288,000 had been disbursed for 24 young agropreneurs. — Bernama
